Hi, My name is Tyler. I'm 16 and have a 75' CB550F. I just recently got the bike running. I have a few questions. First, I know a guy who has a 78' CB550F (not sure if it is a K model) parts bike for sale. Are parts interchangeable between mine and his? Also, my bike is running but it runs rich. I had to turn out the idle screw so it would idle which is why it's probably running rich. The carbs sound sycned. Any thoughts? I also had to redo alot of wiring because somebody before me didn't know what they were doing with the bike (that's a whole other story). But, to simply put it, sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. This includes everything from the entire bike turning on, to the turn signals, to the head light. I'm guessing a bad relay. Lastly, what's the best way to clean out brake lines and the reservoir? Thanks.

Tyler, First off, welcome and congratulations on getting your bike running. You've asked a lot of questions, so here are a few answers. Some of the parts will interchange between bikes, but some will not-carbs are different, but could be used with some mods. Usually when a bike sits for a long time, the jets plug up and run lean. If yours is rich, it may be that the choke is not completely open or the floats are sticking,or the float needles are dirty,or......-the list goes on. Check your plugs to see if it's rich on all cylinders or just one. As far as the wiring problems, there's not too many relays, but lots of connectors that could be corroded. I use Tarn-ex to clean all the brass connectors and then coat them in di-electric grease to keep them clean. Sometimes you can clean switches (ignition, turnsignal, cut off) with aresol contact cleaner. I use isopropyl alcohol to clean and flush brake fluid systems.
Hope this helps, keep us posted.

........Paul

I am working on a 1975 CB550 right now. I have the carbs apart and will need the o rings around the main jets. They are the push on style main jets #100 to be exact. 550's are pretty decent bikes. Looks like Kehin carbs on mine and the synchro screws are up close to the cylinder. I will have to get some carb kits before this one is running.

I have found that WD-40 works well as a contact cleaner.
