Yep, powder coating is orders of magnitude better than any painting, particularly for a customized bike.

It's also orders of magnitude more expensive... Smile At least around here. For a bike that's only going to be worth $1 or 2K when its all done (like all of mine seem to be), it sure is hard to justify.

IMRON? That's Old Skool! It was the hot ticket back in the 70s and 80s! Not to disrespect yer uncle, but it's almost a cliche that a 'vette enthusiast would be pushing Imron! Laughing

By the way, you never elaborated on YOUR project. What kinda bike? What kinda look will it have when done? A custom? A rat? A resto? A 'nice bike'?

Kirk

*edit* Well, let me take my foot out of my mouth. I just Google'd Imron, and I guess it's updated for the modern age. I take it back. Smile I guess it's just the image I have when someone says Imron paint - guess I'm showing my age. Smile

Back to the earliest comments. If you are looking for a correctly restored bike - Paint with an undercoat and not overly glossed. I don't think you need zillion dollar catalyzed paint - just expensive catalyzed paint. Rattle cans are ok just not the best. Good paint with lots of elbow grease for cleaning chrome and polishing front shocks is where the looks come from.

Ray is right, powder coat is happening.
Very durable.
Around Chicago, you can usually get a frame/swingarm done for $300.
I have a church buddy who gives me a better deal than that, even.
Considering that you can just drop off an old funkified frame, then pick up a beautiful, shiny piece - it's worth it.

Well I guess I would say that I am going for the "nice bike" look. Everything I have replaced on the bike has been with NOS Honda parts with the exception of the tires. I couldn't find the OEM tires for it. I am trying to keep it original, although I have already polished the lower fork tubes, all the covers on the motor, the front hub, and the rear hub/brake assembly. I am a perfectionist. A lot of people have already told me that I am worrying about too much little stuff, but I don't want my name associated with work that looks like s**t. Pretty much, even though this is my first bike I have actually restored[/i], I want people to look at it and think that someone experienced has done all that hard work. If I am going to do something, I'm gonna do it right...no matter what it costs. It just might take me a little longer to get it done Laughing

BTW...THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!

Anyone tried Rustoleum Rust Reformer? I've been using it on my 160 project and it sticks good and seems to make a good base for color coat. The standard sanding and surface prep apply, but so far so good.
I painted the rear fender and headlite bucket in Rusto Stainless Steel, trying to match the Honda silver gray color on the bike, its too dark, but it looks pretty good so its staying.
I think if your not going for a perfect paint job, rattle can it.Anyway, take a look at the original paint on vintage bike frames. They more or less just hit them with thick coats of black, nothing real pretty.
