The petcock tubes that extend up into the tank are actually copper, I believe.

You can buy regular carb kits for those, they contain all the gaskets and needle seats, etc.
Also, petcock kits are available.

It's your decision to try and run it with a tank like that.....

I've had good success with a 50/50 mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone poured into the cylinders to clean/free up stuck rings. Pour it in, let it soak, turn it over a couple cranks, repeat for a couple days. Seems to work good for me.

hmm...cool idea

it turns over.. on the kick starter it gives the pop pop out the exaust.. i've only turned it over about three times though.

theres water comming out all the tubes and the holes for the petcock switch[i took it off] and in the sediment bowl so maybe its all good?

OK. at this point I think I should just bow out.
I personally feel your bike is way past the "just get it runnin'" stage, and in need of a total rebuild.

Not trying to be snobbish, but there are two approaches to projects like these.
One is the just get it running appproach, the other is the start from ground zero and do it all over approach.
I realize you're a young guy, and impatient to ride it, but I think any further attempts to force it to run will just make matters worse, and i don't want to be a part of that.

So I wish you much luck - it's a great little machine.

thanks,

my dad says if anything i need to see if i can get it to run.. and fix everything thats messed up...

or

start at 0 and go up.

I want to ride it.. but I want to fix it right..but I'd look/be SOOOOO much better if it was restored

restoration would cost lots..and a 16 year old working saturdays isnt such a rich person

depending on what it'll take to get the bike in running condion then i'll decide which path to go down. So far.. the gas tank first.. then the electrics to be rigged to make it run/start and make sure its got compression.. and it should run..

then i'll go from there

at minimum its got to have cables, brakes, carb cleaning, patched fuel tank

I totally understand - you can count on a restoration of that magnitude lightening your wallet by about $1,000.
That's a lot of money to most of us here, even us Olde Fartes.

Most of my projects have to be done at a slow pace, based upon economics.

So we all can relate.
Sure would be a SWEET restoration, though. And a real trffic-stopper to ride.

good and bad day..

Good part?

i was messin with my gas tank. got out the stripped head removers.. and my dad took at it first..

and got the petcock screw out and the emblem screws out.

Question How do you get the honda wing emblem off?

Bad part
I took the left carb off to find corrosion and while scraping it off with a screwdriver i found that it was corroeded through.

I took off the right one to find it clean and good.. the right ones soaking in gas as I type and the left one in a box. I'm going to try to find one somewhere.

No pics of the right side since I took it off pretty quickly to make sure it wasnt corroded.

in side the left port it had some of that corrosion so I believe that i'm going to take the top end off and have a look see inside. I may be removing the jug to have it honed, painted etc before I get any further. I'm not doing a full ground up resto but close

They pry off - very carefully.
Use a small screwdriver, you'll see two little pins that fit into holder-thingies (called speed nuts) in the tank.

Like I said at the beginning of this thread, I don't think there's any way this bike could have been induced to run at all, much less run well.
You're looking at a complete overhaul, top to bottom. You may want to consider cuttin' bait and selling it off, and getting a project a bit more manageable.

In its current condition, I'd give maybe $100 or so for it, tops, and then only because I like the model. Those photos almost make me cry.

my dad says it'll never run.. if it does it wont see the road till 2011 or so.. i'm here to prove him wrong Laughing ..if i got something else.. it'd be a harley since my uncle that lives cross the street owns a harley cycle shop. haha..this is my starter bike to get used to riding...when i get it riding..

i figure i need to take the top end off.. motor off and cleaned.. clean the frame pretty good.. rework the brakes.. new cables.. and the electrical nightmare thats been told to me.. and that should be all.

i'm ordering a gasket kit tonight [ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Motorcycle-Parts-Accessories__Honda-CB175-CL175-K1-K6-CD175-SL175-Gasket-SetCompleted_W0QQitemZ300263359483QQadnZMotorcycleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2863QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300263359483&_trkparms=72%3A543%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245
]

so i can go ahead and get that top end off whenever..and get that crud out..

new rings..

honed..

=D

well i got the rest of the right carb apart today abd asked my uncle about honing it. he said the smallest hes got is a 3 1/2" bore.. and i've got a 2" bore so i'm going to have to take it down town to a friends shop [little brothers football coach] and see if he can do it. He said he cant "Vat" my tank since it has gas it supposedly will dead the chemical in the vat ..causing 180 bucks to re-fill it..so i guess it'd cost me 180 bucks. Theres a race car shop in town [ i live in a little town anyway] so i'll ask him.

no progress pix but so far
Carbs off
Emblem-less tank
Gasket Set ordered..

next.. find a carb [try saturday]
Removal of the head and check inside to see whats up with the cylenders

-Question-Any tips on getting the head off?

Does the motor need to be off the frame? i just need to see if the jug does need to be removed or will it do as is.
Also do you have to have a metric compression checker or are sparkplug threads generic on motorcycles?

Wow! Go for it. It sounds like you've got a goal and you're on your way. Like it's already been said, most people would pass on this bike. But it sounds like you have something to prove,so go for it. It's not going to be easy, and when you're all done, you might look back and ask yourself why, but you'll learn a lot on the way. If you take some time, you'll be able to get it done and I'm sure we'll all enjoy the progress pictures. If we can be of any help, just ask, that's why were here. good luck.

.......Paul
By the way, spark plug threads are always metric, but you might need an adapter because the ones on your bike are probably 12mm, which is smaller then most car- 14mm.
