"I will be setting up a VJMC booth. - Searles"
Great idea to have the VJMC booth at the
Gilmore Museum event, or any other event!
How about having VJMC products and
information, to both show and handout, to
people who stop by the booth??
Four of us drove up to a bike event, in SE Michigan,
a few weeks ago and we noticed the VJMC
booth. It sat there bare, except for a Sunday newspaper
on the table. No new, or old VJMC magazines,
no VJMC literature, sample club clothing ..... nothing.
A fellow standing near the empty table, told one of our wives,
that it would be "better" next year ..... but we have no idea
if he was even with the VJMC.
For the Gilmore Show, how about getting some past
issues of the magazine, from the VJMC, for
visitors to thumb through? Remember how we loved the
magazine when we were VJMC "newbies?"
Maybe some VJMC Regalia, (shirts, hats, etc),
and the newest magazine to hand out to
new members who actually sign up at the show?
Inform the new folks, about the benefits of joining
VJMC, (magazine, website, member discount
at Red Roof Inn, member discount at KOA, etc).
Like the AMA and ABATE representatives do
about their groups, at their booths.
I read on our website that the VJMC Secretary
also has new VJMC brochures to "hand out" to
interested people, who might not want to sign
up at Gilmore, but who might sign
up via mail from home later.
Having a VJMC video running
on the table, like the AMCA and
VJEMC do at shows, highlighting our
events, would also be a great idea.
And there is a DVD available, that was shot
at the 2006 Michigan Rally last summer,
by Norm Smith, a VJMC member. I'm sure
VJMC would be happy to let you borrow their
copy, to run at the booth.
Just having an empty table, under
a pop up shelter, with a "VJMC" sign hung
out front is OK I suppose ..... if you just
want a place to "shoot the breeze."
But ..... if it is a "VJMC" Organizational booth,
with the space donated, for free, by the hosting
group to the VJMC, (i.e. Gilmore, Barber, etc), it
would be really nice to show interested visitors, who
pass by, the great parts of the VJMC and have them
leave with at least a VJMC brochure in their hand.
We would bet that the VJMC President, Pete Boody, would
be more than happy to help a member, who is
going donate his valuable time at the VJMC booth,
to get Official VJMC material coming your way,
in plenty of time, for the Gilmore event, week after next.
We didn't, and will not, mention the event
by name because we have no interest in
embarassing anyone who did their best.
But Sherry took pictures of the
empty booth while she was
testing her new Nikon digital
camera. We looked at them
last night and they showed the
bare booth, sitting empty.
A fellow there said it would be "better
next year" and it is easy to accomplish
with help from the National VJMC,
thus the suggestions.

If it was the Holly event, we set it up and are not embarrassed at all. But it couldn't have been Holly, because you had mentioned you couldn't make it due to too short of notice. The wind was gusting to 35 mph and we didn't want all the magazines, brochures, etc blowing all over the streets. I apologize, I didn't sit in the booth the entire 8 hours I was there. I surely would have liked to met you. I was gone for a while, helping judge the bikes in the show. I had about 6 other VJMC members help man the booth as well. I did talk to a fellow there that had all kinds of ideas, but then he mentioned he wasn't a VJMC member - that couldn't have been you either because he and I were inside the VJMC booth. I suppose he had all the answers, but didn't want to participate. Unfortunately, there are alot of those people out there.
Your suggestions are noted, which I already had most of them covered. The video would be a nice touch.
Are you a VJMC member?. Maybe you can help Steve out at Gilmore, or help at Mid-Ohio.

Starting to polish and load up for the show on Sunday. Tent, banner, magazines, Books, Brochures, applications, bikes, tables, chairs. This is my checklist. Hope to see you all there.

What a great time at the show Sunday. A good strong showing for all vintage jap bikes. The VJMC tent was a huge success with many people stopping by to say hi or join up. Awesome. (I have only figured out how to attach one pic at a time so I may have several replies.)

Here is a pic of our very own Charlie T from this forum. Great to meet him. He is a bike nut that has ridden and raced for 30 years. His Red Rocket Elsinore is cool but his original steel tanker Penton was what he raced back in 1970. He even had his original laced boots and helmet with Joffa mouth guard. I love events like this!

I just want to send out a big Thank You to Steve for taking care of the Gilmore show. I couldn't make it there due to family obligations. I knew Steve would do a great job, and the feedback I've received confirms that. Most important though is the time he took out of his schedule to be there. I'm sure those of you that met him at Gilmore know as well as I that this is a guy that loves bikes and is basically just great to hang around with. Job well done buddy.

30yrs? I wish it was only 30yrs! I'll give you a clue, my very first bike was a 1965 Honda S65, bought new.....and I still have it! The numer of folks who stopped and checked out the old Elsinore was amzing. Of course they all either had had one or their brother/friend/whomever they knew had had one. The surprising thing was all the folks who pointed to and commented on the old boots and helmet. They seemed to bring back a lot of memories for folks.
The booth was very professional in appearence, several nice bikes on display, a table full of literature, and was always staffed as far as I could see....not surprising though, as it was also in the shade!! Set up near the sections where the Japanese bikes were on display as oppossed to being across from teh Harley/Indian section was also good. Japanese bikes by far were the largest classes in the show.
BTW Steve, still have that TS250 down in the barn with your name on it....etched in the barn residue with a putty knife.

It was a great day. I am planning on making a Kalamazoo run in a couple weeks and will stop by your place and get some barn dust. I will use the TS250 to get the barn dust back to my house. It was great to meet you finally. Did I tell you that I am going to race my old 1974 Elsinore 125 in two weeks at a vintage VMX down in Indiana. Wish me luck, I will need it. I am out of shape!

Any idea which bike won the
Spectators Choice?
Roger Smith of Michigan has sent in some photos and a writeup of the show for the VJMC web site. He won not only the Spectator's Choice with his 1966 red Suzuki X-6, but also First Place, Japanese Bikes 299 cc or less. Roger's '67 Big Bear Scrambler placed 2nd in the same class. He and his future son-in-law restored both bikes.
Look for a show summary on the VJMC web site soon. _________________ Beth Braun
