Hi, I am resurrecting an old dirtbike and need to know how to check and set the timing, as well as the factory carb settings (throttle stop screw, air screw).

The engine pops once only each time I kick it and the kick starter kicks back hard each time. The spark seems good. Could the timing be so far advanced that the engine is turning backwards when it fires? Can the timing be changed by removing the magneto flywheel and replacing it in another position?

I may need a new needle valve, does anyone know where to find a new one? I need to get this bike running so that I can sell it and spend some quality time with my Hondas.

unfortunatly yamaha unlike most other manufacters didn't put timing marks on the magnetos you have to measure down from TDC and set the points with the set screw that holds them in so you'll need a TDC inditcator and a dial gauge, as for the carb, the throttle stop screw should barely touch the air mix screw start at 1/2 and turn out until it runs the best sorry can't be more specific but don't have anything on the 175's got a 74 dt250 myself
