Yes, there is supposed to be oil inside the alternator cover since that is directly open to the crankcase. I would remove the sprocket cover and degrease and wash the entire area around the alternator cover. Let it dry, then spray all surfaces with a dry athlete's foot powder like Tinactin, which will leave a white coating on the surfaces.
Then run the bike a short time, stop and inspect. Any oil leak will show up easily as a stain in the white powder, so you can see exactly where it is coming from. Common spots are the shift spindle seal and the alternator wiring grommet. If coming from the grommet, pull the side case, lift the grommet out of its notch in the case and spray with solvent like Brakeclean. Then slide the grommet one way and the other on the wires while spraying more solvent. When dry, apply a case sealer like hylomar, Hondabond, Gasgacinch etc. to the wires and slide back and forth to get the sealer into the grommet holes. Apply more sealer around the outside of the grommet and reassemble. Let dry, then retest.

The grommet for the alternator wiring is one issue, another can be the shifter seal, very typical problems.
The grommet needs to be gobbed up with Hondabond4 or similar grey gasket maker material and the seals under the countershaft sprocket cover can all be bad, I've recently replaced all four of them in a CL350. _________________ Ray #1
