Hello, I just joined the forum and what a great resource! I recently got a 1978 DS185 w/o a stock carburator but it did come with a detached Tillotson HR184A. I don't have any experience at all with this type of carb but I am interested in seeing if it will work anyway. It has an adapter plate to fit my intake. The bike's oil tank/assembly is missing so I'll be pre-mixing I guess.

My question is if anyone has ever used this type of carburator on a similar bike? If so, will I be able to use the oil nipple at the bottom of the cylinder as a pulse to operate the carb? Any information at all would be greatly appreciated, this type of carb is all new to me. Thanks,

scott

I've researched this long enough to know that these bikes will NOT run for long on premix. They run lean and overheat. Find an oil pump and install it.
As for the carb, there are a number of the correct 2 cable ones out there. Check ebay, etc. I'd stay away from the aftermarket ones. Too risky.

I picked up a Mikuni carb for this bike and managed to get it running alright. I've read elsewhere that these bikes use the oil pump to directly oil the crankshaft which is why premix is a bad idea. I wonder if anyone has information about how to modify the internals to get oil to the crank or if anyone has an oil pump for sale that would fit this bike? Thanks a lot,

scott
