Hello there, im new to this site but I have run out of ideas on whats wrong so here we go.

I have a 1980 suzuki gs550 that cant hold an idle , revs up at stop signs and was running very rich .
So i cleaned out the carbs piece for piece and replaced plugs and wires (you know the usual stuff) but still have the same problem.
Now it does run better, no sputtering and so on , but still it can't hold that idle and still revs up and down at stops .

So i messed with the idle adjust screw and cleaned all the parts but still same prob .

So if anybody has any ideas im open to them . Thanks for the help AL

Carbs that are out of sync will do that.

Have you checked or replaced the ring seals to the engine? They are between the carb and the engine. You just unscrew the connecting rubber tubes from the engine and they are right there. I've read on other GS and GR forums that this is a very common problem and this is the first thing the look at. I replaced mine right away and bought extras just in case. A local dealer had them.

Good luck
