I finally got my T20 running. On the first test run it did pretty well and had no problems. But I took a second ride this afternoon, and it started doing something strange (and kind of terrifying). At a stop, with the bike in gear but the clutch fully depressed, the engine started racing. The RPMs wouldn't stabilise but kept climbing, until finally I decided to kill the engine. I tested the bike again while it was sitting in the driveway -- putting it in gear and holding in the clutch, and it happened again. I had my brother watching the carbs and he said that the sliders didn't budge, which leads me to believe that there's a problem with the choke system. This would also account for the heavier than usual blue smoke coming out the back.

But I have no idea what specifically could be causing this problem. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm new to vintage bikes, but i had somthing similar happen to me on my 74 suzuki t500.
I was running it stupidly without the battery and didn't know this was bad.Trying to isolate a problem.
All of a sudden the r.p.m. at an intersection while stopped stayed at 5000.
Happened twice.
Think i fried the silicon rectifier, a coil and a condenser.
I replaced the coil and condenser, and everything is back to normal.
I don't know if this helps or not.
Good luck.

Well, the T350 won't run without a battery, as it doesn't have an alternator. I have checked the condensers, points, coils, and the rectifier and they all check out ok. I have a feeling the problem is with the carb choke/starting system. When the revs start ramping up the engine is running very rich, as the slide valves are closed. The smoke is tremendous. I think I am right in assuming that unless something was wrong with the choke (i.e. it's stuck open), the carb under normal conditions would not be providing enough gas for the engine to rev so high. I guess the next step is to get the idle right and then see if the problem comes back.

Anyway, I'm sidetracked at the moment because the petcock has developed a leak which I need to fix first.

It's always something, right?

Try working the clutch in and out while (engine off) watching the the choke cables, the clutch cable may be routed in a way that it pulls on the choke cables.

i know this is a month or more late but....pilot mixture could be off. if two carbs check sync. if one pull and bench sync. the buttrefly might be staying open.....happens sometimes. Smile
