This tragedy happened to a $45,000
Indian, with matching correct year sidecar,
a few weeks ago in Finland.

Can you just imagine how the owner felt standing
there, watching this disaster happen, right in front of his eyes?

Check those fuel lines regularly!

Alcohol was made for drinking; NOT to be used as a solvent to dissolve fuel lines. My riding buddy had gasohol in his Triumph Bonneville when it dissolved the fuel line while it was parked in his garage. The only thing that prevented disaster was LUCK. We no longer put anything with alcohol in our old motorcycles.

It sounds like the lines would have failed whether or not he had E10 in the tank or not 'Gasahol' has been a staple in the midwest and other parts of the country since the 70's and hose manufacturers have used compatible compounds since then. Any rider using gas lines older than 30 years is just asking for trouble.

This may be a newbie question,
What should i be checking for in particular. Are the signs of deterioration obvious at a glance or do i need to be taking lines off to check something more closely.
I have a 1974 Suzuki T500 and there seems to be three clear fuel lines coming from the petcock, all seem to be original and are slightly yellowed with age. Two lines always have fuel in them and go to the carbs, one is always empty and runs to the outflow boot of the left carb. Some kind of overflow?
Also i've heard that filling old gas tanks to the top can cause them to rupture along seams, sometimes while riding? Is this something to worry about or is it a freak occurence?

Those clear lines are not original on that bike, I would lose them and get some high quality rubber fuel line hose at your local auto supply house. The hose going to the left intake activates the automatic petcock.
