I was actually thinking the same thing. I've seen engines (cars and bikes) that were advanced more than 5 degrees that didn't backfire like this thing. I'm thinking that it had be something to do with source coil and the ignition coil being out of time with each other. The next time I get a bike that will run without a battery, I'll have to do some experimenting.
