My father in law has come across a 1985 Honda VF1000R, and is thinking about purchasing it. Can someone give me a little history on these bikes and their collectability? Of have any of you had any experience with them? If so let me know.

Thanks
John

A good friend had one, in fact he owned two.One a runner and one that needed a bit of work. The gear driven cams added a reliability factor to the cam-drive that the early 750F and 1000F models didn't have. The motor was an absolute locomotive and for a brief period of time the 150 mph they achieved was considered 'fastest production bike'. Wasn't long how-ever before Kawasaki's GPz900 eclipsed this speed. While the motor was a locomotive it was also considerably heavier than the F models. The combination of the 16" front wheel under an over-weight bike meant they required considerable experience and ability to ride fast. Most of us preferred to do our 'pretending to be talented road racers' on something more nimble.

Thanks for the great information guys. What do you think the value on a good to excellent condition 85 model would be? Are these bikes considered collectible?

Collectible for sure but I don't think it would pull great value as far as collectible bikes go.
But in great condition value it has.

Things to look for when buying Regulator/rectifiers, fuel pumps, suspension ,top end oiling problems.

Its has enough age under its belt to pull the big bucks if it were going to

Take a look at Honda VFR750R RC30 and RC45 they are special and pulling big bucks

Even the 1985 GSXR750R which I consider to be a major revolution turning Point in bikes with there fantastic all around sports attributes does pull a good dollar if mint but still not the big bucks.

I think nostalgia and general rarity it your major playing card find a hardcore collector in need and you might get a nice surprise.

Over all I would say the 1985 Honda VF 1000R would be worth $8500 + but could take years to find a buyer.
If i was looking for a bargain to flip id be paying no more than $3500 and hoping for a sale at 4500 - 5500 tops .

Just my opinion best to ask around as much a possible and decide what the bike means to you.

The Hagerty guide values the bike as follows:

#1 Concours $8,000
#2 Excellent $6,500
#3 Good $5,000
#4 Fair $3,500

The link has descriptions of their condition rating criteria.
